Who is Dongfeng?

From Second Automobile Works to the cars on Singapore roads.

Dongfeng began with an unusually literal name: Second Automobile Works. China already had a First Automobile Works in Changchun. The second was built in Shiyan, in the mountains of Hubei, where construction began in earnest in 1969.3

Putting a vehicle factory there was a military decision as much as an industrial one. Under the Third Front programme, China moved strategic industry inland, away from the coastal centres considered vulnerable to attack. Mountains offered cover. They also made bringing in equipment, materials and workers rather more difficult.23

Building in Shiyan

A second national vehicle plant had been talked about, shelved and revived for years. Under the Third Front it finally happened. Surveyors picked Shiyan in the mid-1960s, a token start was made in 1967, and the real construction push came in 1969. The mountains that would normally have ruled out a factory site were the reason it was chosen.3

The people came from First Automobile Works up in Changchun, the plant that had been building trucks since the fifties. Among them was Meng Shaonong, one of the founding figures of Chinese automotive engineering. So the new works had experience before it had a roof.3

A truck first, a business later

The first product rolled out in 1975: the EQ240, a 2.5-tonne military truck. Three years later came the EQ140, a five-tonne civilian truck, and that was the one that changed everything. Dongfeng's own history claims 5,120 of them in 1978 against a plan for 2,000, and a profit the same year. Take the exact numbers with the usual grain of salt, since they come from the company, but the shape of the story holds. A factory built for strategic reasons discovered it could sell things.3

In 1992 Second Automobile Works became Dongfeng Motor Corporation, and the story turned to cars.5

The French connection

That same year, Dongfeng went into business with the French company that owned Peugeot and Citroën, then called PSA. The joint venture was based in Wuhan, and its first car was a Citroën ZX wearing a Chinese name: the Fukang, roughly "prosperity and health". Early cars were assembled from imported kits; later ones were built locally. A saloon followed in 1998, and the hatchback stayed on sale in China long after Europe had moved on from the ZX.67

For thirty years the name was on the factory gate, not the grille. Dongfeng was the landlord.

You've already driven a Dongfeng, probably

Here is the part that surprises people. Nissan's big Chinese joint venture is with Dongfeng, from 2003. Honda's is too, from the same year. If you have owned a Nissan or a Honda that came out of China, there is a decent chance a Dongfeng factory built it.58

Honda's original announcement is nicely unglamorous: a Wuhan plant being fitted with new welding and paint lines to build 30,000 CR-Vs a year, after nearly a decade of making parts and engines together first.8

That is also why Dongfeng feels new in Singapore. For thirty years the name was on the factory gate, not the grille. The badge on the car said Nissan, Honda, Peugeot or Citroën. Dongfeng was the landlord.

One thing to be clear about, because people ask: those are separate businesses inside the group. Building Hondas for Honda does not make the Box a Honda underneath. The Box, the Vigo and the 007 come from Dongfeng's own car programmes, which grew up alongside the joint ventures and are now the ones being exported under Dongfeng's own name.

The rest of the world

Dongfeng is enormous at home and still a newcomer abroad. It exported more than 250,000 vehicles in 2024 and says it wants a million a year. The Box went on sale in Italy in September 2024. The Vigo launched in South Africa in April 2026 as the cheapest electric crossover in the country. The premium brand, Voyah, has been in Norway since 2022 and across southern Europe since 2024, in small numbers. Dongfeng itself says the Box has been a top-two seller in its class in Hong Kong and Singapore.11121314

Volt Auto, the new kid

The company selling Dongfeng here is Volt Auto, and it is a new name in a trade dominated by old ones. Founded and run by Soh Ming, it brought the Box to Singapore in the last quarter of 2024, with the cars sold under Dongfeng's own badge for the first time.1516

It has not behaved like a cautious newcomer. It tied up with Charge+ to give Box buyers three years of charging credit. It launched the 007 at Funan in October 2025 by flying in Jessica Jung, formerly of Girls' Generation, which it claims made it the first car brand here to import a global celebrity for a launch.

It announced plans to take Dongfeng into Malaysia in 2026 and to support a knock-down assembly plant there. And in late 2025 Dongfeng gave it a Marketing Innovation award at the brand's global partner summit in Xiamen, where the Vigo made its world debut with Singapore in the photos.151617

Carro became a second authorised Dongfeng dealer in February 2026, so the brand is sold through two channels here.18

Worth knowing what you are dealing with: a young distributor with a state-owned giant behind it, spending hard to make a name. That is a different proposition from a Cycle & Carriage or a Borneo Motors with fifty years of service history. Neither is better by default. But it is the honest description.

The cars we have lived with

We have now reviewed all three own-brand Dongfengs on sale here.

The Box R scored 7.4. Mrs Eevee liked its easy manners, the drawer, the cat, and would have liked a real volume knob and sharper pedals.1

The Vigo scored 7.1: comfortable seats, real space, a clever split tailgate, and a price that does the talking.9

The 007 Premium scored 7.9. A 272-horsepower rear-drive fastback with a generous cabin and a driving mode called Combat. After a trip through the company archive, that name makes a lot more sense.10

Fifty-seven years after the first truck left a valley in Hubei, the East Wind has finally got its own name on a grille in Singapore.
