Air or Performance?

Same car, S$46,000 apart. We've driven both G6s. Six rounds, one answer.

The XPENG G6 Air and the G6 Performance are the same car in every way that costs money to design, and different in every way that costs money to buy. Same body, same cabin layout, same 15.6-inch screen, same 18 speakers, same boot. One has 110 kW and sits in Cat A. The other has 358 kW and sits in Cat B. I've now spent time with both, on separate loans a few weeks apart, and scored them 8.2 and 8.7.

Half a point sounds like nothing. S$46,000 doesn't. This piece is about whether the two numbers agree.

Two separate press loans, not a back-to-back test. Prices are XPENG's September 2026 list with COE, four bids guaranteed; the figures in brackets are the effective price with XPENG's trade-in, finance and insurance bundle. Conditions apply. Treat them as dated comparisons, not today's quotation.3

Round 1 of 6

The screens

This should have been the Performance's easy win. It has the Snapdragon chip, the one in flagship phones, and the Air has a MediaTek that XPENG doesn't put on the poster.

I couldn't tell them apart. Menus, maps, voice, the app store, YouTube, the avatar that drops its window when you drop yours. All of it runs the same on the Air. XCombo, the macro builder I spent half the Performance review on, is there in full, community store included.

The one visible difference is the instrument cluster. The Performance draws traffic behind you as well as ahead and beside. The Air only draws the front and sides, because it's running seven fewer cameras. Whether you'll miss it depends on how much you look at the little 3D world instead of the mirrors.

Air Same screens, cheaper car

Round 2 of 6

The driver aids

Here the camera count should matter more. XPENG says the Air's lane centring is less refined, and on paper five cameras and four radars against twelve and five is a big gap.

On the road I never found it. I ran XPILOT on both cars on the expressway and in slow traffic, and both held their lane and their distance without a flinch. The Performance is still the best driver assistance I've tested. So is the Air, because I can't separate them in normal Singapore driving.

Air. Five cameras, and the cluster watches the front and sides.
XPENG G6 Performance 360-degree camera view on the main screen
Performance. Twelve cameras feeding one screen.

I haven't pushed either car to the edge of what the system can handle. If the extra cameras earn their keep, it'll be somewhere past that edge, and most owners will never get there.

Draw Couldn't split them where it counts

Round 3 of 6

The cabin

This is the Performance's round, and it wins it on touch rather than sight.

Both cabins look the same from the back seat. Both have the floating console, the ambient lighting, the glass roof, the two wireless pads, the big back bench and the 571-litre boot. Both have the 18-speaker Xopera, all 960 watts of it, which is the single most expensive-feeling thing in either car.

Air. Vegan leather, same layout.
XPENG G6 Performance seat massage menu on the main screen
Performance. Nappa, and this menu.

The Performance has Nappa where the Air has vegan leather, a microfibre headliner you'll keep touching for no reason, a camera mirror that sees over three tall passengers, and six massage programmes I used more than I'd like to admit. The Air's seats are still ventilated and heated, and they're good seats. They just don't rub your back.

Performance Nappa, massage, camera mirror

Round 4 of 6

The drive

Neither G6 is a driver's car. I said that about the Performance, and the Air didn't change my mind. The steering is light and quiet about what the tyres are doing, and both cars float a little over undulations rather than settling.

What separates them is the throttle. The Performance surges. Four seconds to 100 km/h, all-wheel drive, the kind of quick that makes passengers go quiet. The Air needs a moment, then gets there, and at 60 km/h with your foot down you feel exactly where the 110 kW limit lives. It's fine in town. It's the thing I'd change if I owned one.

Performance The only round the brochure undersells

Round 5 of 6

Range and charging

The Air has twelve fewer kilowatt-hours. It also used 12.2 kWh per 100 km in my hands against the Performance's 13.4, so the smaller battery goes almost as far. Roughly 480 km against roughly 500 km from a full charge, on the trip computers.

Charging peaks at 382 kW on the Air and 451 kW on the Performance. XPENG claims 10 to 80% in 12 minutes for both, and no charger in Singapore can test either claim. I didn't charge either car during the loans.

Draw Twenty kilometres and a charging speed nobody can use

Round 6 of 6

The money

S$46,000 on the list. S$44,000 with XPENG's bundle on both.

For that you get 248 kW, a second motor, 12 kWh, seven cameras, Nappa, the massage and the camera mirror. Against it, the Air is Cat A, which is the segment most Singapore EV buyers are actually shopping in.

Air The extras are real, they aren't S$46,000 real

Two rounds each and two draws, which is roughly what a half-point gap in the scores looks like when you pull it apart.

The car neither of us has driven

There's a third G6, the Pro RWD Long Range, at S$250,999 with COE. On paper it's the sweet spot: the Performance's battery, cabin, chip and cameras, with a single 218 kW motor, 6.7 seconds to 100, and Cat B. It's S$17,000 over the Air and S$29,000 under the Performance.4

We haven't driven it, so we won't rank it. If XPENG lends us one, this becomes a three-way piece.

So which one?

Buy the Air if you're shopping Cat A, or if the tech is what sold you on the G6 in the first place. Everything that makes a G6 feel like a smartphone on wheels is in the cheaper car, and the S$46,000 you keep buys a lot of things that aren't Nappa.1

Buy the Performance if you'll use the acceleration. Not the number, the feeling. If a slow car gets on your nerves, the Air will do it within a week and the Performance won't. That's worth paying for, and the cabin extras come along for the ride.2

If you're in between, ask XPENG for a Long Range test drive before you sign anything. It's probably the answer, and we'll tell you for sure when we've driven it.
